Stressed Out? Find a STAR!

Stephen R. Covey argued the essence of being proactive (habit number number 1 in the “7 Habits of Highly Effective People) was to create some space between stimulus and response. Within this space proactive and wise choices can be made because of our self-awareness, imagination, conscience, and independent will. While this is great advice, I have struggled with the “how”.  Just saying, “I have the freedom to choose” is the easy part. Making some space to allow my inner wisdom to take over and enable positive, proactive choices is the hard part, especially when I am stressed out, anxious, or worried. Happily, I have discovered a practice that helps me make some space and increase my capacity to choose well. I call this STA2R, with the A squared.  This practice is based on the mindfulness steps of living in the moment and acceptance. The steps are:

  1. Stop and recognize unpleasant thoughts (worries) and feelings (anxiety)
  2. Take a deep breath, beginning with one deep breath followed by another
  3. Accept things as they are, including thoughts and feelings, with caring, curiosity, and understanding
  4. Ask yourself what you really want, taking into consideration your values
  5. React in a positive way in alignment with your values and true to your vision

The STA2R practice is illustrated in the following diagram:

The next time you have the urge to react, perhaps in a negative way, consciously make the choice to pause and practiceSTA2R. To make this exercise a habit, take time each day to practice these steps. Over time, you will catch yourself “making space” and responding in proactive ways in alignment with your values.

I’m at a transitional part of my life, as I looked back at how far I’d come and wondering where I was supposed to go next, I was filled with fear, paralyzed even, not knowing what to do and scared I would make a wrong decision. Your book helped me break through that fear, to see my concerns for what they are and to look at them objectively, without so much pressure. It really helped me feel more comfortable and motivated to take steps forward.

This is such a great hands-on way to approach personal well-being because it combines wellness with faith. People are afraid to admit they have emotional, social, or mental anxiety. We are taught that faith can move mountains, so “surely our faith can cure or eliminate fear.” But HOW? I have never read anything with as much practical advice about getting out of my own head that also infuses faith as a way to help and motivate, rather than as an excuse to judge.

Are you Discouraged?

I recently listened to a talk by Elder Larry R. Lawrence given at BYU.  In his talk he shared a fable about the devil:

Satan went into his garage one day and noticed that everything was a complete mess. He couldn’t find what he was looking for because there were so many rusty tools lying around cluttering up the place. Satan decided on a solution. He would have a garage sale. He cleaned up his old tools and offered them at a discount price for other devils to purchase. Some tools sold right away—for example, the hammer of hatred, the wrench of fear, and the clamp of addiction. They were very popular items. When he was asked why he was selling off so many of his tools, Satan explained that he had decided to concentrate all of his personal efforts on bringing down the Latter-day Saints. He preferred to use his favorite tool on them. What do you think it was? It was the wedge of discouragement. Satan boasted about it, saying, “With this one tool I can inflict major damage on the faithful. Discouragement works wonders every time—even when nothing else will. It can bring misery to the most conscientious souls—those who are striving to keep the commandments.” Then Satan, using his favorite tool, went about whispering lies. To the humble followers of Christ he said, “You are worthless,” “You never do anything right,” “Give up,” “No one cares about you,” and “You can never change.” Sadly, many good people believed him.

Sadly, many people do believe him and become discouraged.  Our beliefs and self-image are often a result of our thoughts — bad thinking.  Gratefully, the Lord has provided remedies including the Lessons from Liberty Jail outlined in my new book “Breaking the Chains of Worry and Anxiety.”  I invite you to download a free preview copy at:  Breaking the Chains of Worry and Anxiety.
